When I knew my Nonna’s final days were drawing near I sat in bed with her and asked her, “If you could give me one piece of advice in life, what would it be?” She felt very put on the spot and told me she’d have to think about it. Later that night she responded,
I think about that phrase often. Be together. Sometimes I wish I had pressed more to find out what she really meant by that statement, but I guess deep down I know. It’s everything she lived for during her 88 years of life.
Nonna loved to cook and as a Sicilian she was good at it! She taught me that good food brings people together and good people keep people wanting to come together. Spend time with those important to you, spend time communing together in community.
Nonna loved to dance. She knew how to party and lived life vivaciously! Whenever music played Papa took her in his arms and they took to the floor. She and my grandfather loved each other to the core. They were so deeply in love and when they danced it was palpable. When you find the one you love hold on to them dearly. Live into your passions together and love deeply.
Nonna and Papa loved to travel, but I think what they truly loved about it were the friends and family they did it with. The laughter, the fun, the memories are multiplied in good company. Have adventure in life, yet remember there is no greater adventure than simply living. Share life with others and your riches will be great.
Life is to be celebrated! Cook, dance, spend time with those you love and make lasting memories--TOGETHER!
