When our oldest daughter (almost 4yo) was little and in daycare full time she learned the phrase "help please!" Stay calm and ask for help and any situation can be fixed, Auntie Claire would say. It's a wise phrase that has helped the past few years of parenting littles. We just taught our second daughter (18 mo) to say it the last couple weeks and it's the sweetest words to come out of her mouth, "-ep PEEEz!"
On Sunday, the girls were all ready for church and I was determined to squeeze in a shower before we had to leave. A few minutes into the shower big sis comes into the bathroom to kindly inform me that little sis had a poopy diaper. I told her I would change it as soon as I was out. A few minutes later they both RAN into the bathroom... little sis yells "-EP PEEEZ!" and big sis scolds, "she won't sit still so I can change her diaper!" (in her I'm the boss voice). I thanked bib sis for wanting to help, but told her to wait for me. She then informed me, "I already did it!"
WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU ALREADY DID IT!?!? was the thought that ran threw my mind. I wish I could have said "help please!" and someone would have come to my rescue in that moment. My shower was over...
Indeed she had already attempted to change little sis's diaper. I'll spare you the details, but to my surprise is wasn't as bad as it could have been, a few more wipes and change of clothes and we were on our way again. Though I was slightly frustrated, I was really impressed by big sis's desire to help (especially with a task I don't like to do).
Later that night our younger daughter woke up in the middle of the night. I heard her climb out of bed and anticipated little footsteps making their way to my room but they ran to the other side of the house. After a minute things were quiet again and I waited. I got up and checked on where she ended up and found her fast asleep snuggled up with her sister.
As I am now 15 weeks pregnant, amidst the daily chaos, I am reminded constantly how blessed I am to have two daughters that even as littles are super helpful and love each other so deeply! I am glad they will have each other when the new baby is born and I am glad I have them!
Do you have "helpful" kid stories to share!?
